Ultrasonography is a very commonly used imaging method. It is used in fetal examinations in pregnant mothers and generally in examinations of the abdominal region.
Ultrasonography is also commonly used in examinations concerning the heart, gallbladder and soft tissue and to supplement mammography. More than 650,000 ultrasonographic examinations are performed annually in Finland.
Ultrasonographic examinations supplement radiographic examinations and have partly replaced them. Using ultrasonography makes it possible to avoid the radiation hazard caused by X rays. There is no scientific evidence of a connection between ultrasonography and cancer.
