Mining

Mining
A ‘mine’ refers to a production unit which seeks to extract mining minerals. Mining and underground excavation carried out in Finland is subject to a mining license and mining safety permit granted by the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes). Furthermore, mining and underground excavation requires various permits, including an environmental permit granted by the Regional State Administrative Agencies (AVI). STUK oversees radiation safety in mining and its preliminary work, if the radioactivity of naturally radioactive substances and exposure to natural radiation caused by mining activities require this.
