Restrictions on the use of radioactive substances in products
Restrictions on the use of radioactive substances in products
According to Section 27 of the Radiation Act, the use of radioactive substances in foodstuffs, cosmetics, toys and corresponding consumer products is prohibited. It is also prohibited to import and export consumer products that contain radioactive substances.
For a justified reason, STUK may approve the use of a radioactive substance as a radiation source in consumer products. Currently, the only approved application is the use of Americium (Am-241) in a smoke detector. A safety licence is required for the trade and import of such smoke detectors.
