Regulation of consumer products that contain radiation sources
Smoke detectors and some other consumer products may use small amounts of radioactive substances. STUK regulates the trade of such consumer products as well as their radiation safety. Furthermore, Tukes supervises the technical compliance of smoke detectors.
STUK’s market surveillance focuses on products which are not normally inspected at the place of use. Such products on the market are especially consumer products that contain radioactive substances. For the regulation of consumer products, STUK collaborates with the Finnish Competition and Consumer Authority (FCCA) and the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes).
Tukes is the market surveillance authority for smoke detectors. Tukes supervises that smoke detectors meet the requirements set forth in the rescue legislation and the regulations issued under it. Furthermore, a safety licence issued by STUK is required for the import and trade of smoke detectors that contain radioactive substances, and STUK’s approval is required for placing new smoke detector models on the market.
