Radiation measurements

Radiation measurement is necessary in many different places and for a variety of reasons. Meters are made subject to different requirements that can be found in Guide ST 1.9.

It must always be ensured, however, that the meter used is suitable for measuring the type of radiation in question and has been appropriately calibrated, and that the measurement result is sufficiently reliable for the purpose.

Radiation measurement is carried out for the purpose of individual monitoring of work conditions and employees, in activities that expose people to cosmic radiation, and in quality assurance of the use of radiation in health care and the determination of patient doses. In addition to radiation measurements, computational methods are also used to determine radiation exposure.

Meter requirements

Radiation meters must be properly calibrated. When selecting a meter, it must be ascertained that the meter is capable of measuring the radiation quality and dose rate in question.

Approvals related to measurements

The approval for the dosimetric service and the methods of measurement used for individual monitoring has to be applied in writing from the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority.

Metrological activities

It is the duty of the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority to maintain the national metrological standards, which help ensure the reliability of radiation measurements.

STUK’s chargeable services

STUK’s individual monitoring and dosimetry laboratory functions as the national standard laboratory for radiation quantities, which maintains the metrological standards of radiation dose parameters and performs calibration, irradiation, measurement and testing. Individual monitoring and the dosimetry laboratory also conduct research connected to radiation metrology and the medical use of radiation.
