The Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority may request a description of the use of radiation
If the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) suspects that non-ionizing radiation is used in beauty care in such a way that the limit values for exposure may be exceeded, STUK will request the operator to provide a description on the activities.
With the request, STUK asks the operator for information on the devices used in the treatments and their technical properties. Based on the technical characteristics of the devices, STUK will assess the exposure of the person being treated and the safety of the treatment procedure. A treatment device that is excessively powerful may be prohibited from further use, but the primary aim is to determine whether it is possible to use the device safely, for example, by means of drafting additional treatment instructions. The safety of the device may also be improved by means of technical modifications.
The request also asks for information on the use of the device, the persons using the device and their training in the use of the device. In certain cases, a report is also requested on how the customer is informed about the risks of the procedure, what contraindications are taken into account and how the customer is examined for them. This information is used to assess whether the service can be implemented safely and as required by the Radiation Act.
For all devices, the following information is requested:
- Intended use of the device
- Name of the device manufacturer and importer
- Name and type of the device
- Instructions for use and any additional treatment instructions
Additional treatment instructions may be important particularly for the use of radio frequency (RF) devices, as they may specify lower power settings or shorter treatment times in the treatment area compared to those indicated in the user manual.
The Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority may request a description of the use of radiation: Devices
