Press release

The Dosimetry Laboratory of the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) is elected as the dosimetrysection member of the International Committee for Weights and Measures’ (CIPM) Consultative Committee for Ionizing Radiation (CCRI). This membership is a considerable recognition of Finnish radiation measurement competence.

The acquisition of this membership means that STUK’s Dosimetry Laboratory is considered to be internationally recognised and of extremely high quality. According to Principal Advisor Paula Toroi, the membership is a significant international step for STUK’s Dosimetry Laboratory. This Committee membership offers the laboratory excellent international opportunities to influence dosimetry-related development at the highest possible level.

“Being a member means that STUK is even more closely engaged in the international cooperation to develop the accuracy of radiation measurement and improve the comparability of radiation measurements all over the world,” says Toroi.

The International Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM) is the organ implementing the international Metre Convention. Similarly, as the unit meter of length and unit kilogram of weight  need to be the same all around the world, the units used in radiation measurements must also be comparable.

In Finland, the national measurement standards of ionising radiation are maintained by STUK. With the help of the metrological standards, STUK’s Dosimetry Laboratory calibrates radiation meters, which creates the foundation for the international comparability of measurements.
