Preliminary safety assessment on the application for a fifth nuclear power plant

Teollisuuden Voima Oy (TVO) in December 2000 submitted to the Finnish Government an application for a Decision-in-principle in accordance with the Nuclear Energy Act for the construction of a fifth nuclear power plant. According to the application, the new nuclear power plant unit would be located on the site of either Loviisa or Olkiluoto nuclear power plant.

The Government made in January 2002 a favourable decision-in-principle on the construction of the nuclear power plant unit plan put forward by TVO.

Parliament's final approval

On Friday, May 24, 2002 the Finnish Parliament approved plans for the construction of the country's fifth nuclear power unit by a majority of 107 votes to 92. This vote formally ratifies the earlier decision by Finland's government in favour of an application by Finnish utility TVO to build the unit. The next step in the licensing process will be to apply for a construction license, which can be granted by the government.
