Nuclear test ban verification in Finland

The national authority for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) in Finland is the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. STUK operates the National Data Centre. The task of the National Data Centre is the maintenance and development of national verification systems required to detect nuclear tests. Verification entails the receiving and analysis of data collected by the International Data Centre from the monitoring stations worldwide, and communication between Finland and Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO).

In addition, The National Data Centre observes the construction of the International Monitoring System, participates in its design, evaluation, and other research and development work related to the nuclear test ban. It also approves on-site inspectors. The National Data Centre supports the Ministry for Foreign Affairs when making verification-related decisions.

In Finland, there is a seismic monitoring station operated by the Institute of Seismology of the University of Helsinki. STUK has radionuclide laboratory which analyses particle samples from the CTBTO.
