Categorisation of radioactive waste in Finland

The waste produced by nuclear power plants is the subject of the Nuclear Energy Act and the waste from the use of other radioactive materials is the subject of the Radiation Act. These main categories can be divided into sub-groups according to the final destination of the waste.

In Finland nuclear waste is produced by the four reactors of the Loviisa and Olkiluoto nuclear power plants. Small amounts of nuclear waste is produced by the Otaniemi research reactor as well.

Spent fuel from a nuclear reactor is high level waste. During the operation of a power plant, waste of lower activity level, so-called operational low and intermediate level waste, is also produced. This type of waste is also produced when power plants are eventually decommissioned and dismantled.

Radioactive waste which is comparable to the low and intermediate level waste produced by nuclear power plants is also generated in conventional industry, research facilities and hospitals. This kind of waste, transferred to the responsibility of the State, is stored at central storage facility located at Olkiluoto.
