Kola NPP
The plan made by IVO International Oy (now Fortum Nuclear Service) started the co-operation with Kola NPP. It aimed primarily at structural improvements at the plant. The improvement proposals included in the IVO plan were the emergency feed water system which is independent of other systems at the plant, supplementary boiling margin control for the reactor control system, and the assessment of emergency equipment, among other things. IVO participated in the formulation of the instructions supporting operation and maintenance.
Most of the plans made for the first and second units of Kola NPP were possible to be carried out by means of the financing provided by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The units 3 and 4 were excluded from the financing.
A heating system of the emergency cooling water funded by the Finns has been installed for the fourth unit. The heating system mitigates the danger of brittle fracture if there is a leakage in the primary circuit. An important achievement is the delivery of a full scope training simulator for the training of the operational personnel.
Norway has funded fairly considerable equipment deliveries to Kola NPP, too. The deliveries are comprised of the equipment on the wish list of Kola NPP. By the help of Finnish experts, it has been possible to make the choice so that it is as useful as possible as regards safety. Finland and Norway have funded the development of a safety parameter display system which eases the work of the operational personnel.
Later on Norway, Sweden and Finland have combined their efforts with the Kola plant financing and provided essential technical safety improvements such as complementary emergency feedwater system and fire detector systems.
