Pipe welding at the OL3 construction site allowed to continue

20/10/2009

The Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) has received from Teollisuuden Voima (TVO) a report concerning welding contrary to instructions, which STUK observed recently at the Olkiluoto 3 construction site. On the 20th October 2009, STUK approved the report submitted to it, and the subcontractor may continue the welding work at the site.

Between 6th and 8th October 2009, while supervising the Olkiluoto 3 construction site, STUK’s inspectors noticed that welding instructions were not being observed in the welding of cooling system pipes. According to the report TVO issued about the incident, it has initiated the necessary measures, such as increasing welding supervision and the training of welders. STUK has approved these measures, but requires TVO to further focus on its inspection and supervisory instructions.
