Employee radiation exposure in nuclear power plants

The Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority monitors the exposure to radiation of nuclear power plant employees in order to ensure that the dose limits of employees due to radiation work are not exceeded.

The effective dose to which employees are exposed during radiation work cannot exceed an average of 20 millisieverts (mSv) per year over the course of five years, and no more than 50 mSv in a single year (Radiation Decree 1991/1512). The highest radiation dose to which Finnish nuclear power plant workers were exposed in 2014 was 9.2 mSv. During the period between 2010 and 2014, the largest combined radiation dose to which employees were exposed was 47.2 mSv. The set limits were not exceeded.

The Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority also monitors the collective (combined) radiation dose to which nuclear power plant employees are exposed. The collective dose provides information on the success of radiation protection for employees at facilities, among other things. The length of the annual maintenance of power plants and significant tasks from a radiation protection viewpoint affect the size of the annual collective dose.

Collective (combined) doses of nuclear power plant employees at the Loviisa NPP
The image shows the collective (combined) doses of nuclear power plant employees at the Loviisa plant between 1977 and 2016. The annual maintenance during odd-numbered years was smaller in scope than that carried out in even-numbered years. The collective radiation dose among the employees of the Loviisa power plant during its operations was at its lowest in 2015.

Collective (combined) doses of nuclear power plant employees at the Olkiluoto plant
The image shows the collective (combined) doses of nuclear power plant employees at the Olkiluoto plant between 1980 and 2016. In 2005 and 2006, for example, major turbine work was carried out, resulting in employees being exposed to larger doses of radiation than normal. The collective radiation dose of the employees of the Olkiluoto power plant during the operations of the plant (OL1 and OL2) was at its lowest in 2013.
