Calibration, testing and irradiation services

The Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority performs calibration, performance tests and irradiations of radiation meters.

Irradiations are also performed on passive targets such as biological samples or electronic components. Upon agreement, calibration and measurements can also be performed at the location where radiation is used. Furthermore, STUK provides calibration and measurement services related to the measurement of non-ionizing radiation and meters or research as well as safety assessments related to the use of radiation.

Ionizing radiation

STUK functions as the national standard laboratory for radiation quantities  and  maintains the metrological standards of radiation dose parameters.

Quality system

STUK participates in the international Mutual Recognition Arrangement CIPM MRA (Comité Internationale des Poids et Mesures). The national metrology institutes and national standard laboratories participating in the arrangement acknowledge the equivalence of their measurement standards and the calibration and measurement certificates they issue. The objective of the MRA is “once measured, accepted everywhere”.

The quality systems of the laboratories taking part in the CIPM MRA arrangement meet the requirements of the ISO 17025 standard. The approval decision of STUK’s quality system is based on self-declaration. An approval decision based on self-declaration necessitates annual reporting to the EURAMET association and regular external audits.

Additional information about the measurement standards system of Finland is available on the website of the Centre for Metrology and Accreditation (MIKES). The CIPM MRA Calibration and Measurement Capabilities (CMCs) of the dosimetry laboratory have been published in the database of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM, Bureau International des Poids et Mesures).
