Press release

STUK International Ltd and King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy (K.A.CARE) signed an agreement in July 2017. Its objective is to establish an independent, competent and efficient radiation and nuclear safety authority in Saudi Arabia. The co-operation was presented publicly for the first time at the General Assembly of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on 18 September.

Established at the end of 2016, STUK International Ltd is a Finnish state-owned company that exports safety expertise abroad. “The company enables us to improve nuclear and radiation safety in countries that need improvement in this field but do not yet have sufficient expertise for it. Finnish expertise in this industry has a very good international reputation and organizations are interested in co-operating with us,” says CEO Pekka Ottavainen.

STUK International Ltd manages service projects and purchases the relevant subject expertise from outsourced providers. The expertise is mainly sourced from the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) but can also be supplied by other sector providers. STUK experts have been co-operating with Saudi Arabian experts since 2014. The collaboration has intensified after the state of Saudi Arabia made a decision in July 2017 to launch its nuclear energy programme.

“The objective is to establish an independent, competent and efficient nuclear and radiation safety authority in Saudi Arabia. Our co-operation has now focused on drafting legislation and safety requirements, building a public authority organization and training staff, as well as creating an operating model for a regulatory control authority. Such projects are useful also for the reason that they further strengthen the radiation and nuclear safety expertise in Finland,” says STUK Director General Petteri Tiippana.

The co-operation was presented publicly for the first time at the General Assembly of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on 18 September.
