Jussi Heinonen appointed as director of the Nuclear Waste and Material Regulation department at STUK

Jussi Heinonen, MSc in Material Technology, aged 38, has been appointed as director of the Nuclear Waste and Material Regulation department at STUK from the start of 2016.


Mr Heinonen has worked at STUK for 13 years. Before his current role, he worked as section head for Nuclear Waste Facilities Regulation, and he was responsible for supervising the safety of nuclear waste management and for matters pertaining to the final disposal of spent nuclear fuel, in particular.

The main duty of the Nuclear Waste and Material Regulation department is to oversee the safety of nuclear waste management, ensure that nuclear material, facilities and technology are only used for peaceful purposes, and manage the national information centre for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty.

Within these duties, the department supervises, among other things, the safety of the processing and final disposal of spent nuclear fuel and other nuclear waste and the decommissioning of nuclear facilities. The department is also responsible for nuclear material regulation and the regulatory control of the transports of nuclear waste and nuclear material.
