Finland set to export radiation and nuclear safety expertise abroad

Press release

The Finnish government’s ratification of the memorandum and articles of association for the state-owned STUK International Oy on 17 November 2016 paves the way for more effective export of Finnish expertise on radiation and nuclear safety matters.

STUK International Oy has been set up to market Finland’s radiation and nuclear safety expertise to public sector bodies internationally. The company will provide project management services and purchase the relevant subject expertise from outsourced providers. The expertise will mainly be sourced from the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) but can also be supplied by other sector providers. The new arrangement is designed to enhance radiation and nuclear safety in Finland and its partner countries, and in line with the Finnish government’s economic policy, to boost the export of Finnish know-how internationally.

“STUK is highly regarded internationally as a regulatory authority for radiation and nuclear safety, and there is demand for our expertise abroad, particularly in countries that are in the process of adopting or developing their radiation and nuclear energy capabilities or enhancing their regulatory and supervisory arrangements. Early collaboration with countries that have recently decided to introduce nuclear energy is the best way of ensuring that it is carried out safely,” Petteri Tiippana, Director General of the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority, Finland, commented.

The Finnish radiation and nuclear safety sector is also due to benefit from the projects, as international collaborations present opportunities to broaden and diversify our expertise and to generate additional revenue, allowing us to maintain our domestic resources and develop our activities without placing an additional burden on the state budget.

STUK will be represented on STUK International Oy’s Board of Directors by Petteri Tiippana, Director General and Kirsi Alm-Lytz, Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation. Ilona Lindholm, Key Account Manager at the Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT), is due to act as Chairman of the Board along with Ilpo Nuutinen, Senior Government Counsellor at the Prime Minister’s Office and Jorma Aurela, Chief Engineer, Ministry of Employment and the Economy as members. The Board of Directors will appoint a Managing Director following a public recruitment exercise.
