Environmental Surveillance and Preparedness

The laboratory is responsible for carrying out the nationwide radiation surveillance programme and for maintaining and developing operational emergency preparedness.

The environmental surveillance programme consists of:

  • Automatic ambient dose-rate monitoring network, altogheter 285 stations all over Finland
  • Continuous surveillance of airborne radionuclides at eight stations in Finland
  • Monitoring of radionuclides in foodstuffs, drinking water and fallout, 400 samples yearly

The laboratory is responsible for operative dispersion and dose calculations and developing of decision support systems for emergency preparedness. It coordinates and gives guidance and technical support for regional laboratories, and maintains international data and information exchange in emergency preparedness.

The laboratory participates in international projects and cooperation within the area of environmental surveillance and preparedness.
