Radioactivity in cereal crops – survey

Aim of the study

The objective of the project is to gain basic information about the activity concentrations of naturally occurring radionuclides in cereal crops and to complement the previously gathered results on artificial radionuclides.

Implementation

The project is carried out in cooperation with Finnish Food Safety Authority (Evira). Evira organises sampling for the ”Fusarium mold toxins, pesticides and Cs-137 in cereal crops for human consumption” project and provides STUK with approximately one hundred samples for analyses. Naturally occurring radionuclides (u238U, 234U, 232Th, 228Th, 228Ra, 226Ra, 210Pb ja 210Po) will be first determined in 32 samples, 137Cs in all samples and 90Sr in 20 samples.

Dissemination and exploitation of the results

One or two articles based on the project’s outcome will be composed and published in an international peer-review journal and in a domestic trade publication. A press release will be prepared at the end of the project. The results will introduce new valuable data to be employed in assessing effective doses from food intake among Finns. Moreover, the results will be utilized in radiation monitoring of the environment.
