Survey of indoor radon concentration in low rise residential buildings built in 2007-2008

Aim of the study

STUK carries out a new survey on indoor radon concentrations in low rise residential buildings built in 2007–2008. The study aims at evaluating radon concentrations in new buildings and assessing the efficiency of radon prevention measures.

Implementation

STUK offers a free indoor radon measurement for householders that have received a new building permission in 2006 aiming at 1 500 participants. The address data will be delivered by the Population Register Centre in Finland. The results to be analysed consist of the provincial and municipal percentage of dwellings exceeding the action limit of 200 Bq/m3 and the corresponding average radon concentrations.  Prevalence of radon prevention measures carried out and the effect on indoor radon concentration are also key results.

Dissemination and exploitation of the results

The study will give a new basis for evaluation of future changes in radon concentration of new buildings. The results will be published in STUK-A-report series as well as in international meetings and scientific journals (2009–2010).
