Radon mitigation in homes and at workplaces

Aim of the study

The project aims at maintaining the know-how of Finnish indoor radon mitigation activities through collecting research information from Finnish and foreign mitigation measures for counselling and Finnish guidance material.  The results will be utilised to update the national mitigation guides.

Implementation

Sub-slab-suction (SSD), radon well, sealing entry routes and ventilation based measures are the main mitigation methods. Finnish know-how has been collected through two mitigation questionnaires. STUK has received replies from altogether 800 house owners. In addition, case studies have been carried out in dozens of houses.

STUK published a new guide in 2008 (STUK-A229). A new guide for mitigation work in big buildings and at workplaces will be published in 2009.

Dissemination and exploitation of results

Arvela Hannu and Reisbacka Heikki, Indoor radon mitigation, STUK-A229, September 2008.

Guide for indoor radon mitigation at workplaces is to be published in 2010-2011. Also scientific publications will be published in international journals.
