Radon campaigns

Aim of the study

The aim of radon campaigns is to increase the radon awareness of the citizens, to increase radon measurement activity and to activate home owners to indoor radon mitigation, and to increase general radon communication.

Implementation

In the campaign the house owners can carry out indoor radon measurements for a reduced price. The project includes also follow-up of the indoor radon mitigation measures needed in the campaign areas. Training of local companies in radon mitigation is also a part of the programme.

By September 2007 the campaigns have been organised in altogether 64 regions in the area of 160 municipalities. The total number of measurements has been 14 100 and in 1 900 of these the action level of 400 Bq/m3 has been exceeded. Based on questionnaires sent to house owners having a radon concentration exceeding 400 Bq/m3, 37% - 60% of the respondents had carried out radon mitigation in their houses.

Training in indoor radon mitigation has been given in nine one-day seminars. The total number of local health authorities and participants from construction companies has been 340.

Dissemination and exploitation of results

Publications will be issued, among others, as press releases and articles, research reports and scientific articles, and at the STUK www-site.
