Exposure of general public to radiofrequency radiation

Aim of the study

A survey supporting the risk communication is carried out on the exposure of the general public to radiofrequency radiation. Data is gathered on the exposure caused by the most common user equipment as well as the exposure to the background fields from the broadcasting transmitters and base stations in different residential environments.

Implementation

A comprehensive literature survey is carried out to find the most common sources of radiofrequency radiation and to assess the exposure caused by them. The available data is completed with measurements of e.g. the field strengths caused by broadcast transmitters and mobile phone base stations.

Dissemination and exploitation of the results

A technical report directed mainly for professional use is compiled where the data obtained from the literature survey and the measurement results are gathered. The report is published in STUK report series. In addition, a comprehensible review is written on this topic and can be utilised in risk communication directed for the general public.

Collaborators

The project is implemented using STUK’s own resources. The measurement data and other material collected by, for example, the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health and Digita Ltd. is utilised in gathering the data.
