Validation of ADAM-AASIfit software in gross alpha determination from ground water samplesAim of the studyThe objective was to validate the ADAM-AASIfit software developed at STUK, so that it can be reliably used in gross alpha determination from ground water samples. ImplementationVarious type of drilled well water samples were selected for the study. Water samples were selected so that quality of water and activity concentration of natural radionuclides varied in the studied waters. In the first stage, the main emphasis was put on the sample preparation. The goal was to find out a method to produce good-quality samples. After this, 50 to 100 water samples were selected for the study. From the water samples, an aliquot of 15 ml, was evaporated into a stainless disc under an infrared lamp. After evaporation, the disc was measured by alpha spectrometry for one week. The water samples, measured by alpha spectrometry were analysed using the ADAM-AASIfit software. From the same water samples, the gross alpha activity concentration was determined by a liquid scintillation method. The results obtained were compared and statistical tests were calculated. Dissemination and exploitation of resultsThe ADAM-AASIfit software gives more nuclide-specific information compared to the liquid scintillation method. Also the sample preparation and availability of the results are more rapid. The ADAM-AASIfit software can be utilised in the services offered by STUK and emergency preparedness. Based on the results a validation report will be written. CollaboratorsNone outside STUK. Timetable2007–2009 Responsible scientistRoy Pöllänen Page updated 17/05/2009
