Radiation practices regulation
Updated 27/11/2008

The radiation practices regulation includes the use of radiation and radioactive substances in health care, industry, research and teaching. Radiation practices regulation is based on the Radiation Act (592/91). The fundamental requirement in radiation practices is that the benefit must be bigger than the harm caused by the use of radiation.

A safety licence granted by STUK is needed for the use of ionising radiation. In order to get the licence, the applicant must demonstrate that the purpose of use is reasonable and acceptable, and that usage environment, radiation sources, protective equipment and employees meet safety requirements.

The radiation exposure of the workers who use radiation sources are monitored with personal dosimeters. Data on doses is stored in the dose register maintained by STUK.
