07/12/2006

Research Professor Dariusz Leszczynski from STUK - Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority of Finland has been appointed Guangbiao Professor by Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China.

Leszczynski’s appointment is for three years period starting on January 1st, 2007. He will be involved in research on biological effects of electromagnetic fields and especially mobile phone radiation. Every year Leszczynski will spend one month in China keeping lectures and seminars. During the whole appointment period he will supervise research projects of graduate and PhD students working in the Bioelectromagnetics Laboratory of the Zhejiang University Medical School.

Guangbiao (K. P. Chao) Professorship is sponsored by Zhejiang University’s K. P. Chao's Hi-TechFoundation for Scholars and Scientists. The purpose of the Foundation is to invite distinguished scholars and scientists to conduct collaborative research in China.

In opinion of Professor Leszczynski, this appointment brings also new research possibilities for STUK.

”For the last six years we have been studying biological effects of mobile phone radiation using high-throughput screening methods of proteomics and transcriptomics. The same research approach has been adopted by Professor Zhengping Xu form the Bioelectromagnetics Laboratory at the Zhejiang University. This appointment will allow us to broaden our already ongoing collaboration and, in this way, speed up the research on the effects of mobile phone radiation on human proteins”, says Leszczynski.

During the Guangbiao Professorship appointment, Leszczynski will continue his present research projects in Finland and the primary appointment as Head of Radiation Biology Laboratory of STUK.
