Director General of STUK, Prof. Jukka Laaksonen, was awarded for his nuclear safety work in Lithuania26/10/2006
Prof. Jukka Laaksonen was accredited with the active participation in the work of the Nuclear Safety Advisory Committee of Lithuania since its establishment in 1993. The task of the Committee is to give advice to the government of Lithuania concerning the safety and waste management issues of Ignalina, the only nuclear power plant in the country.
The safety of Ignalina NPP has been systematically improved taking the advice of the Nuclear Safety Advisory Committee into account. The operation of the NPP’s older unit, Ignalina 1, was terminated in the end of 2004 and the other unit, Ignalina 2, will be closed down finally by the end of 2009. Before this, some further modifications to enhance the safety of the NPP will still be carried out at the second unit. During the last few years the duties of the Committee have dealt more and more with the decommissioning of the plant. The commission members have assembled three times a year. The meeting held yesterday was the last to be held this year. In future the work of the Committee will focus on the waste management, and Mr. Tero Varjoranta, Director of Nuclear Waste and Materials Regulation at STUK, will take the place of Prof. Laaksonen in the Board. Besides from Lithuania and Finland, there are representatives also from the USA, UK, France, Germany, Japan, Sweden and Ukraine in the Nuclear Safety Advisory Committee of Lithuania.
