The strategy set up to secure activities vital to the Finnish society is implemented as broad-based cooperation between authorities. Protecting the population also calls for improved operating models drawn up for radiation accidents and for good cooperation skills. STUK’s operational strength must be increased in the form of rapid field measurements, reliable data transfer systems and maintaining real time information on the situation.

STUK actively participates in the preparation of operating models and guidelines for different kinds of radiation accidents. The emphasis is on the definition of responsibilities and on cooperation with different parties in the latter phases of a presumed fallout situation. Another focal area deals with the handling of radioactive waste resulting from cleaning operations.

At an international level, IAEA is working on modifications to the international guidelines that deal with preparedness for radiation accidents, cooperation and mutual assistance. STUK is an active participant in international development work and updates the plans under its responsibility to comply with international arrangements.
