The background radiation in Finland ranges from 0.05 to 0.30 mikrosieverts per hour (µSv/h). The regional variation in dose rates depends on the differences of uranium concentration in Finnish rock and soil. The snow and ice attenuate the radiation from the ground. The rain may cause short term increase in dose rates by bringing radon and its daughter products closer to ground.

The external dose rate monitoring network is comprised of 275 stations. The monitoring results of the network are updated to STUK´s webpages once an hour.
