The background radiation in Finland ranges from 0.05 to 0.30 mikrosieverts per hour (µSv/h). The regional variation in dose rates depends on the differences of uranium concentration in Finnish rock and soil. The snow and ice attenuate the radiation from the ground. The rain may cause short term increase in dose rates by bringing radon and its daughter products closer to ground.

The external dose rate monitoring network is comprised of 255 stations. The monitoring results of the network are updated to STUK´s webpages once an hour.

The external dose rate monitoring network has two main tasks: alarming when dose rate exceeds the defined threshold level and creating a real-time radiation situation overview of Finland. Monitoring stations report the results every ten minutes to STUK and to regional Emergency Response Center. Each monitoring station has its own station-specific alarm level which is the average of the previous seven days’ dose rate and added by 0,1 µSv/h.
