The Helsinki Commission supervises the collaboration

All the Baltic States are contracting parties of the Convention on the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Baltic Sea Area. On the recommendation of the Helsinki Commission, each member state participates in monitoring radioactive material in the Baltic Sea area. The surveillance is carried out by the HELCOM/MORS project group, a group containing representatives from all the Baltic States. In Finland, monitoring is the responsibility of STUK.

All the Baltic States have their own national monitoring programme. Finland’s contribution includes more than 100 samples per year. Samples are taken from sea water, seabed sediment, fish, algae, and benthic animals. The results are entered yearly into the Commission’s database. STUK maintains the discharge register of nuclear power stations in the Baltic Sea area, according to the reported discharge data.
