STUK regulates solariums
The new decree by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health (STM ), which limits exposure to non-ionising radiation (decree 294/2002, citations of the rationales considering ultraviolet radiation), states the maximum exposure to ultraviolet exposure, significantly limiting the use of sun beds. Persons under the age of 18 years should not use sun beds unless under doctor’s orders.
STUK has strict regulations concerning solarium equipment in Finland. These regulations are based on European standards. In Finland, only so-called UV type 3 equipment is approved for tanning purposes. The permitted fluorescent lamps are listed on STUK’s web pages. Spot checks are used to ensure regulations are followed.
Permitted fluorescent lamps for tanning purposes
In Finland, only so-called UV type 3 equipment is approved for tanning purposes. In this equipment, both UVA and UVB radiation is limited so that a user would not burn as a result of a moderate-length session. The list below contains the fluorescent lamps which belong to UV type 3 equipment.
The list is based on studies by the authorities of Sweden [S] (http://www.ssi.se/ickejoniserande_stralning/uv/Solarieroer.html) and Norway [N] (http://www.nrpa.no/fpinternet/english/). Some of the lamps are also approved in Finland [Fi].
