Protection of workers

As a member of the United Nations and its sub-organisation, the International Labour Organisation, Finland has accepted a set of conventions and recommendations concerning the protection of labour. The majority of labour protection issues fall under the jurisdiction of the EC.

The EC has issued many worker protection Directives which Finland has integrated into the Health and Safety Act (738/2002) or has been implemented with lower-level legislation such as decisions by the Council of State, for example. Legislation concerning worker protection is primarily prepared by the occupational safety and health administration of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. The monitoring of compliancy is carried out by the labour protection district. The radiation part of worker safety is monitored by STUK.

Personal protection equipment used while working must fulfil the requirements set out in the decision by the Council of State (1406/1993). Compliancy and use is monitored by the occupational safety and health administration and labour protection district of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health.
