Practice involving exposure to natural radiationSTUK supervises that when carrying out operations which increase exposure to natural radiation of employees or the general public, the operator sets out to investigate and limit exposure, as required by the Radiation Act. STUK, the occupational safety and health administration of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, and various labour protection districts have arranged a collaboration where the labour protection districts also take part, together with STUK, in the monitoring of radon in the workplace. As the regulatory authority defined in the Radiation Act, STUK however gives the necessary orders to repair and other instructions concerning the monitoring or limiting of radiation exposure. STUK inspects underground mines and quarry sites regularly for radon. Mine safety in general is controlled by TUKES on the basis of the Mining Act (503/1965). Aeronautical activity is regulated by the Civil Aviation Authority. Stipulations of the BSS Directive concerning the monitoring of cosmic radiation, which have been implemented by the Radiation Act, have been entered in the European Commission Requirements (EU-OPS), and are thus contained in the Finnish aviation rules and regulations. Under the Radiation Act, STUK monitors the exposure from cosmic radiation to flight staff. Page updated 16/08/2010
